Spain is a land of contrasts, where ancient history blends seamlessly with vibrant modern culture. While millions of travelers flock to renowned destinations like Barcelona, Madrid, and Seville, a world of hidden treasures lies just off the beaten path, waiting to be explored.

Spain is presently my stomping ground and while my focus has been on Andalucia, I've traveled the country far and wide. There are countless hidden gems all around the nation, but I've curated a list of my favorites. Feel free to comment and add yours and leave us some travel tips, too!

Unveiling the Best Kept Secrets

1. Ronda: The City on the Cliff

Nestled in the mountains of Andalusia, Ronda is a spectacular Roman town that sits atop a deep gorge. The El Tajo Gorge splits the town, connected by the

iconic Puente Nuevo bridge. Ronda is famous for its breathtaking views, historic bullring, and charming old town. It's also know as 'the City of Sonnets' as many a poet have settled here seeking inspiration that the surrounding hills so eagerly share. Greats like Hemingway, Irving, and Wells have lived here.

Before you go, I suggest a stop in Setenil de las Bodegas: The Town Built into the Rock

Setenil de las Bodegas is a unique village in Andalusia where houses are built into and under the rock overhangs of a narrow river gorge. This unusual architecture provides a cool refuge from the summer heat and creates a fascinating urban landscape. It doesn't take long to visit. I suggest a photo stop and some refreshments before heading off to Ronda for lunch. I've listed some highlights, but there are treasures around every corner.

Located on the Costa del Sol, Nerja is a charming town known for its stunning coastline and the famous Balcony of Europe, a viewpoint offering breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea. You can easily pass a week here and it's only 45

minutes from Malaga airport. The town has over 400 cafés and restaurants!

• Nerja Caves: Explore these ancient caves with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.

• Burriana Beach: Relax on one of the best beaches in the area, offering crystal-clear waters and a variety of water sports.

9. Tarifa: The Windsurfing Capital

Tarifa, located at the southernmost tip of Spain, is known for its strong winds, making it a popular destination for windsurfing and kitesurfing. It also offers beautiful beaches and a rich history as the gateway to Africa. You can easily get to Morocco from here and pass a couple of days in or around Tangier.

• Highlights:

• Los Lances Beach: A long, sandy beach perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

• Guzmán Castle: A historic castle with stunning views of the Strait of Gibraltar.

• Whale Watching: Take a boat trip to see dolphins and whales in the Strait of Gibraltar.

• Baelo Claudia: This is an ancient Roman city offering a fascinating glimpse into Roman life on the Iberian Peninsula. This well-preserved archaeological site, situated on the shores of the Strait of Gibraltar, was once a thriving center for trade, commerce, and industry.

10. The Alpujarra: Whitewashed Villages

Nestled in the southern slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the Alpujarra region of Andalusia is a breathtaking area known for its picturesque white-washed villages, lush valleys, and rich Moorish heritage. Stretching across the provinces of Granada and Almería, the Alpujarra offers a serene escape into nature and a glimpse into traditional Spanish life.

Highlights:

• White-Washed Villages: The Alpujarra is dotted with charming villages like Pampaneira, Bubión, and Capileira, known for their distinctive Berber-style architecture. These villages, with their narrow winding streets and flower-filled balconies, are perfect for leisurely strolls.

• Trevélez: One of the highest villages in Spain, Trevélez is renowned for its production of Jamón Serrano (cured ham). Visitors can tour local ham curing facilities and sample some of the best ham in the country.
  

• Hiking Trails: The Alpujarra is a hiker’s paradise, offering a network of trails that traverse lush valleys, terraced farmlands, and mountain passes. Popular routes include the GR7 and GR142 long-distance trails, which provide stunning views and an opportunity to explore the region’s natural beauty.
