Israel's Transport Network

Israel's transportation network offers convenience, efficiency, and accessibility for travelers of all kinds.

  1. Railways: Israel's railway system, operated by Israel Railways, connects major cities and regions across the country. Enjoy comfortable and scenic journeys between destinations like Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa, Be'er Sheva, and more. With frequent departures, onboard amenities, and reliable service, trains are a popular choice for travelers seeking a stress-free way to explore Israel's diverse landscapes.

  2. Buses: Israel boasts an extensive network of intercity and intracity buses, operated by companies like Egged and Dan. Travel between cities, towns, and villages with ease, as buses offer affordable fares, frequent routes, and convenient schedules. Explore iconic landmarks, cultural attractions, and hidden gems across Israel's urban and rural landscapes, all accessible by bus.

  3. Taxis and Ridesharing: For on-demand transportation and personalized service, taxis and ridesharing apps like Gett and Uber are readily available in cities throughout Israel. Whether you're navigating city streets, traveling to remote destinations, or simply seeking a convenient ride, taxis and ridesharing services offer flexibility, comfort, and convenience.

  4. Car Rentals: Renting a car provides the ultimate freedom to explore Israel at your own pace. With major rental companies like Avis, Hertz, and Budget operating at airports and city centers nationwide, travelers can easily access a wide range of vehicles to suit their needs and preferences. Hit the open road and discover Israel's breathtaking landscapes, historic sites, and hidden treasures with the flexibility of a rental car.

  5. Cycling and Walking: For eco-conscious travelers and outdoor enthusiasts, cycling and walking offer unique ways to explore Israel's cities and countryside. With dedicated bike lanes, scenic trails, and pedestrian-friendly streets, cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem are ideal for exploring on two wheels or by foot. Rent a bike, join a guided tour, or simply wander at your own pace to discover the vibrant culture and natural beauty of Israel.

  6. Airplane: I'm including air travel because it can be a fast and economical way to get from Tel-Aviv to Eilat if that's your destination. The airline that operates this route is typically Arkia Israeli Airlines. But there can be others, depending on the current aviation landscape and market demand. As for the frequency of flights, it can vary depending on factors such as the season, day of the week, and airline schedules. Generally, there are multiple flights per day between Tel Aviv (Ben Gurion Airport) and Eilat (Ramon Airport). During peak travel seasons, such as holidays and school vacations, there may be additional flights added to accommodate increased demand. It's advisable to check with the airline directly or consult a flight booking website for the most up-to-date information on flight schedules and availability.

Travel Tips

On a recent trip to Israel, my husband and I were caught with our pants down, and it cost us about an hour to sort out, mainly because we don't speak Hebrew. So learn from our mistake!

Purchase a travel card at the airport. The Rav-Kav is mandatory on Intracity transport. You cannot pay for fares with cash or credit. You must invest in a rechargeable travel card for access to buses, trains, and light rail systems in cities like Tel Aviv and Jerusalem.

With that, here are other travel-friendly tips:

  1. Plan Your Routes: Before setting out, use online journey planners or mobile apps provided by transport authorities to map out your routes and schedules. Optimize your travel time by identifying the most efficient connections and departure times for your destinations.

  2. Tap In and Out: When boarding buses, trains, or light rail, remember to tap your travel card on the designated readers to register your journey. Be sure to tap out when exiting to ensure accurate fare calculations and avoid overcharges.

  3. Top Up Your Card: Keep your travel card topped up with sufficient funds to cover your journeys. Reload your card at ticket vending machines, kiosks, or authorized retailers conveniently located at transportation hubs and stations.

  4. Check for Discounts: Take advantage of special discounts and promotions offered to travel card users, such as reduced fares for students, seniors, or frequent travelers. Stay informed about ongoing offers to maximize savings on your intracity journeys.

  5. Explore Integrated Systems: In cities like Tel Aviv, where multiple transport modes operate seamlessly, consider using your travel card across different systems, including buses, trains, and the light rail. Enjoy the flexibility of integrated travel options for convenient city-wide exploration.

  6. Plan for Rush Hours: Be mindful of peak travel times during morning and evening rush hours when public transport may be more crowded. Plan your journeys accordingly to avoid congestion and ensure a smoother travel experience.

  7. Be Aware of Security Measures: Familiarize yourself with security protocols and safety measures implemented on public transport, particularly in light of current events. Stay vigilant and adhere to guidelines provided by transport authorities to ensure a secure and comfortable journey.

  8. Ask for Assistance: If you're unsure about navigating the intracity transport systems or need assistance, don't hesitate to ask station staff or fellow passengers for help. Although they can be hard to find. We had to go into a convenient store to ask about the new system. Most Israelis are friendly and willing to offer guidance to travelers navigating the local transport networks.

  9. Enjoy the Ride: Embrace the opportunity to immerse yourself in Israel's vibrant urban culture as you travel on buses, trains, and light rail systems. Take in the sights, sounds, and flavors of the city while enjoying the convenience and affordability of intracity transport with your travel card.

Whenever we go to Israel, we use a combination of transport options. It's easy to get from the airport to Tel-Aviv or Jerusalem or to travel between the two on public transport. We've even used the buses from Jerusalem to Ein Gedi at the Dead Sea. When we go further afield, we rent a car. The roads are well-maintained and easy to navigate. But be warned, if you don't possess an American credit card, you may have to pay a hefty deposit before they release the vehicle. If this is an issue, check in advance with the car rental company you wish to hire a car from.

Whether you're traversing the historic streets of Jerusalem, soaking up the sun on the beaches of Tel Aviv, or venturing into the desert landscapes of Eilat, Israel's transportation network ensures that every destination is within reach.

So whether you're a visitor discovering Israel for the first time or a local exploring new horizons, navigating the country's transportation system is not just a means of getting from point A to point B, but an integral part of the journey itself—a gateway to unforgettable experiences, cultural encounters, and adventures waiting to be discovered.
